The harsh ocean environment of Southern Ocean leads to the lack of in situ observation data. China's first Westerlies Environmental Observation Buoy was deployed on Jan 1,2019 near -53S, southeast of New Zealand, to measure wind speed, wind direction, air temperature, pressure, humidity, sea surface temperature and salinity, current, wave, etc.in situ and transmit observation data. It is the first extreme environments observation buoy in China deployed in water up to 4500m depth. The result shows that China already has technological base for the development of data buoys for extreme environments and has experience in the deployment of deep-sea buoys. The Westerlies Environmental Observation Buoy developed by China could measure hydrometeorological and dynamic parameters for long term unattended operation in Southern Ocean. |
